Milgram: Obedience

Aim: to investigate the process of obedience by testing how far an individual will go in obeying authority, even if it breaches their moral code.

Research Method: controlled observation - lap exp at Yale university so conditions could be controlled e.g. prods, standardised responses etc. Observations by experimenter in the room and through one-way mirror.

Sampe: 40, 20-50 year old males from New Haven area. Obtained via newspaper advertisement. Wide range of occupations e.g. teaher, postal worker. Paid $4.50.

Procedure: greeted by stern looking experimenter in white lab coat. Always given role of teacher, and saw learner strapped into the chair with electrodes. Teacher had to shock for every wrong answer. Machine ranged from 15-450V. Learner gave set of predetermined answers, 1 wrong for every 3 right. At 300V, pounds on the wall and thereafter gives no more answers.
Experimenter had several standardised prods such as "please continue". Study finished when teacher refused to continue or reached 450V.

Results: 100% went to 300V. 65% went to 450V. Ppts showed extreme stress when giving shocks e.g. sweating, trembling, 3 had full-blown seizures.
