What is copyright law?
· Copyright gives protection to creators of many things, like music, books, videos and software.
· This means there are limitations to what can be done with certain items when you purchase them.
· This was passed in 1988.
Limitations and Exceptions.
· When you buy software, or any item that is copyrighted you can’t:
o Give a copy to someone else
o Make a copy and sell it
o Use software on a network[1]. (some licenses allow it)
o Rent the software without permission from the holder.
· Copyright expires- it won’t last forever.
o After 1978, it’s the life of the author plus 70 years.
o For corporate authorship, it’s either 95 years from date of publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.
E.g. Created in 1980. Published in 2001
