17th century Francis Bacon noted the fit of South American and West Africa, but this evidence did not attract any further research as no one believed that plates could move.

Then in 1912 Alfred Wegener, published his theory that abot 300 million years ago a single super continent existed which he named PANGAEA, and mantained that it later split into two, calling the plate of the North LAURASIA and the South GONDWANALAND. Todays continents were formed by further splitting of these two masses.
