World War 1:

From 1914-1918 World War 1 was fought. This had been caused by the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, leading to escalating tensions between Austria-Hungary and the Russian's (due to their support of the Balkans), and as a result the allies of these countries respecitively (France and Germany. This formed two sides, the Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman's, fought against the Allies,the main powers being France, the U.K, Russia (until 1917), Italy and the United States (From 1917 onwards). Gatsby served in this war, meeting Daisy whilst he was posted at Camp Taylor in Louisville (Fitzgerald was stationed here whilst he fought in the war), and we are told that Gatsby got his medals for waht was effectively gross negligence, leaving the rest of his machine gun battalion in a place that they couldn't reach him, and killing many of the enemy.
