Context:
Contest is about the historical,social and political events of the time,a nd how the writer's own life influences the novel.This helps us understand why a write wants to write about something that has maybe affected them.

Dicken's Life:
His father having moved to London was imprisoned for non-payment of a Baker's bill.The young Dickens had direct experience of the horror of debt.At the age of 12, he was sent to work in a blacking factory, and this experience left him with an understanding and sympathy for the poor, and poor children in particular.

Dickens' London:
The London in Victorian times is very different to the London we know now.During these times, the 19th century, there was a lot of social change and this led to many social problems.Due to the Industrial Revolution, thousands of poor country people left thier rural life and fled to the city in search of work.This led to overcrowding and insanitary conditions, and London just could not cope with this.
