Constructivist approach to CLA

?

Schemas are used by slotting in new vocabulary items, children can make lots of new grammaticalsentenceswithout knowing much about syntax at all.

I'm x-ing it: I'm pushing it, I'm holding it, I'm eating it...

I want x: I want more, I want Mummy, I want chocolate

Evidence:

Children repeat many utterances over and over, in comparison to the speech they hear, children'sutterances are quite limited in terms of:

--Auxiliary verbs used with each main verb;

--Nouns used as subjects and objects in sentences.

Counter:

Nativist approaches can't explain results showing differences in children's abilities with different lexical items. However, some data seem to support this approach, rather than constructivism.

So-called 'telegraphic talk' is common in young children's speech: want bottle, give bis
