The conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created nor destroyed but only transfrred from one type into another. 

When we transfer energy, we always will lose some energy to the surroundings. Example: When petrol is used t power a car, about 1/4 of the chemical energy is transferred to the kinetic energy of the car. 3/4 is wasted as heat. 

There are sankey diagrams to sow the useful kinetic energy of te car versus te wasted energy of te car and the chemical energy in petrol.

Everyday we use energy from fuels to heat buildings and for transport. In all circumstances, some of this energy is wasted as heat heat to the surroundings which rises the temperature. We therefore, try to reduce this heat loss especially from our homes by using various thigs such as:
