Types of conformity:
Herbert Kelman's three ways in which people conform to the opinion of the majority;
1. Internalisation -
- Genuinely accepting the group norms.
- Private as well as public change of opinions/behaviour which persists even in the absence of other group members.
2. Identification -
- Conform to the opinions/behaviour of group because there is something about that group that we value.
- Identifying with the group, so you want to be part of it.
- Publicly changing our opinion/behaviour to be accepted by the group, even if we don’t privately agree…
