Conformity: types and explanations

?

Types of conformity:

Herbert Kelman's three ways in which people conform to the opinion of the majority;

1. Internalisation -

  • Genuinely accepting the group norms.
  • Private as well as public change of opinions/behaviour which persists even in the absence of other group members.

2. Identification -

  • Conform to the opinions/behaviour of group because there is something about that group that we value.
  • Identifying with the group, so you want to be part of it.
  • Publicly changing our opinion/behaviour to be accepted by the group, even if we don’t privately agree
