Conformity: A change in opinion or behaviour due to group pressure or the desire to fit in with social norms

Types of conformity

  • Compliance is when there is a public change in opinion or behaviour, but no private change in opinion or behaviour. The opinion or behaviour stops once the group is absent (superficial change).
  • Identification is when there is a public change in behaviour when a target group is present. You want to belong to this group as they have something you value, so you publically change your opinon but privately, don't agree with everything the group stands for.
