Conformity
Compliance:
- Occurs when an individual accepts influence because they hope to achieve a favourable reaction from those around them. An attitude or behaviour is adopted not because of its content, but because of the approval/rewards associated with its adoption.
- Publicly, not privately.
- E.g. if a group supports Liverpool football team, they may not admit to supporting Manchester United.
Identification:
- A form of influence where an individual adopts an attitude or behaviour because they want to be associated with a particular group.
- Publicly, privately, temporarily.
- E.g. binge drinking at university but not in the workplace.
Internalisation:
- Occurs when an individual accepts influence because the content of the attitude/behaviour proposed is consistent with their own value system.
- Publicly, privately, permenantly.
- E.g. someone may convert from Christianity to Islam because they feel that Islam answers…
