Communication and Homeostasis 1

HideShow resource information

Organisms need to respond to external stimuli - changes in the environment that cause a response. e.g. temperature, oxygen concentration, levels of sunlight                                             These may be over time e.g. winter fur and summer fur                                                                Or quickly e.g. dilating and constricting pupils

Internal environments change as well e.g. build up of carbon dioxide from respiration, changes the pH of tissue fluid , and can therefore inhibit enzyme activity

Multicellular organisms need to coordinate tissues and organs, so a good communication system is needed, which will:

  • Cover the whole body
  • Enable cells to communicate with each other
  • Enable specific communication
  • Enable rapid communication
  • Enable both short-term  & long-term responses

Cells need to communicate to each other by a process called
