Collectivisation

What was it?

• bringing all the individual farms into one collective farm to improve efficiency
• everything - animals, machinery, etc - was shared, everyone worked and pooled the results

Why?

• Communist ideas
• to solve the food problem
• to destroy the kulaks (rich peasants that Stalin hated)
• Stalin wanted to sell grain abroad in exchange for foreign technology

What were they?

• Sovkhoz
  • land owned by the state
  • all produce went to the state
  • workers paid…
