Principles:

  • Faulty thinking: Thinking,expectations,attitudes direct behaviour. Mental illness = inappropriate/disordered thinking. Focus not on problem but person's thinking. Prevents adaptive behaviour. ELLIS (1962) A-B-C model: A=activating event,B=belief,C=consequence.
  • Individual control: Portrays individual as cause of own behaviour as control of thoughts. Abnormality product of faulty control.

  • Experiments: THASE (2007) compared cognitive therapy with antidepressant medication for depression. Cognitive therapy same as antidepressant, patients tolerated more.
