Cognitive Approach

Cognitive Development - Age related changes. E.g. how children think and behave differently as they get older.

Schema = mental structures used to organise past experiences and provide a way of understanding future experiences and making shortcuts. e.g. how to ride a bike or order in a restraunt.

  • These are like mental blueprints that link things and behaviours. They form the building blocks of thinking and children pick these up and recognise them from birth.

Operation = process of working something out in your head. Young children have to act and try things out in the real world to understand things e.g. counting with fingers. Older children & adults do more
