Cognitive approach
assumptions:
-internal mental processes can and should be studied scientifically.
-looks at areas of brain assocaited with memory, perception and thinking.
-as these processes are internal, inferences have to be made based on behaviour.
Information processing approach:
info flows through cognitive system in stages; input, processing and output.
can be compared to the way info is processed in computers, called the computer analogy.
eg. there is a central processing unit (brain) and info is coded (turned into a usable format), as well as there being stores to hold information.
However the weakness of using analogies like this is that computers aren't influenced by emotion as they arent conscious.
