Coding, capacity and duration of memory

?
  • Baddeley (1966) coding in STM and LTM

4 different types of participants were given different types of words accoustically similar, accoustically disimilar, semantically similar and semantically disimilar. Baddeley discovered that the STM is coded accoustically and LTM is codes for semantically, this explains why people are able to memorise cherishing moments because meaningful moments are (sematical) are coded in LTM which potentially has unlimited duration.

  • Jacobs (1887) capacity of STM

researcher reads four digits on a card and increases until the participants are unable to recall the words in the correct chronological order. participants were able to recall 9.3 numbers and 7.3 letters in the correct order.
