Cockermouth Flooding 2009


* Highest ever recorded amount of rainfall in 24 hour period

* Already had a wet autumn so soil was still saturated

* Cockermouth lies at confluence of two rivers --> sheer volume of water overwhelmed the channels and rivers burst their banks onto Cockermouth


* Homes without power or water

* Local schools had to close

* 1800 bridges inspected to see if they were safe

* Several bridges…
