Introduction: Worldwide about 1 percent of the population is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and approximately 1.2% of Americans (3.2 million) have the disorder. About 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with schizophrenia this year around the world.(7 Aug 2009)

Mental health misrepresentation in entertainment media can fuel stigma, leading to discrimination against people with mental illnesses and barriers to treatment. Media that romanticizes or features graphic acts of violence, especially self-harm and suicide, may trigger imitative violence, risking copycat acts.

Aim: Our practical is a replication of Owen's study in 2012. Our aim is complete a content analysis on the two films (the soloist and Angel baby) to see what extent these films attempt to give viewers a more informed narrative about the details of schizophrenia. For example details about the treatments, causes and symptoms. Also looking at whether these two films reimforces/goes against the stereotypes of schizophrenia.

Research question: Would the two films (Angel baby and the soloist) reinforce the stereotypes of schizophrenic patients? Using http://journals.sagepub.com this is finding from an Australian National survey of Mental health literacy and stigma. They had found that chronic schizophrenics are seen as more dangerous and unpredictable and had found people to have more of a stigmatising attitudes to people with mental health issues.Using http://journals.sagepub.com this is the attitudes of american people about mental health and psychatric medication.  The belief that people with mental illness are dangerous so the law should make them take the psychatric medication.

Procedure: We had done a content analyse on the two films Angel baby and The soloist. Angel baby was about two schizophrenic patients who had fallen in love and thought of this as a new beginning. Kate had become pregnant and both her and Harry stop taking their medication.

The soloist is about a journalist for the LA Times, Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Ayers. Steve Lopez is on the lookout for new story ideas when he stumbles across Nathaniel , a homeless man with extraordinary musical talents. Lopez is eager to improve Ayers's situation, while writing a story on him, but the biggest problem may be Ayers himself.

Th researchers worked in pairs and independatly rating the two films according to the pre determined catogries. The pre determine catogries were choosen to compare with Owen's previous findings and linked to the symptoms, treatment and causes of schizophrenia. One researcher had to look at how many scene changes each film had. Both researchers used a three table grid which had one coloum for the name of the theme, second coloum for the quantative data and the third one for the qualatative data. This is giving inter related reliability as there were two researchers giving consistant estimates of the same themes. The researchers tallied the themes and we used a top down approach which means we have decided what catogries to
