cells are important because they are the smallest unit of viable life (i.e the smallest independant structure that can fulfill MRS GREN)

it is used to classify organisms so we can identify what exists where and what it does, we classify (group) organisms based on shared characterists.

a basic classification is based on the complexity of cells
