Schizophrenia does not have a single defining characteristic: it is a cluster of symptoms, some of which appear to be unrelated. The two main systems for the classification of mental disorder are the ICD-10 (world) and the DSM-5 (US)

  • The DSM-5 requires symptoms to be evident for at least 1 month of active symptoms and they must produce a deterioration in functions at work, in social relations and in self-care. There are no subtypes: an individual must show at least two of the specified symptoms
  • The ICD-10 requires symptoms to be evident
