CLASSIFICATION

Classification is Organising Living Organisms into Groups.

Natural classification systems are based on the evolutionary relationships and genetic similarities between the organisms.

Artifical classification systems are based on apperance rather than genes. They are used to identify organisms.

Living things are divided into kingdoms, then subdivided into smaller and smaller groups.

  • kingdom - animals
  • phylum - plants
  • class - organisms containing a backbone or eight legs etc (they contain common traits)
  • order - animals that have special teeth, those for chewing meat
  • family - cats, organisms that have claws
  • genus
