What was it?

Edward VIII wanted to marry Wallis Simpson an American divorcee.

Baldwin's government told him that the British public would not accept her as queen, because she was a divorcee and the British Sovereign was the titular head of the Church of England, and so should uphold the CofE's teachings (they were against divorce). 

Edward suggested a morganatic marriage (where she would be consort not queen) this was rejected by Parliament.
