Each nucleus of each cell in the human body there are 46 chromosomes and they are arranged in 23 pairs. However, gametes only have 23 because they will combine in reproduction to make 46 and this is called a zygote.

Sex Chromosomes

Males have an X and a Y sex chromosomes but females have two X chromosomes. Off spring inherit one sex chromosome from the mother and one from the father. The gender of the off spring depends on whether the ovum is fertilised by a Y or an X chromosome.
