Dickens uses the novel to get across his message that the rich must help the poor in order for the world to be improved, and that it is the rich's responsibility to help the poorest in society. He exposes the unfair treatment of the poor, and shows that the stereotypes that the poor are lazy are untrue, which he does by using the Cratchits, in order to show what living in poverty is like. He goes beyond simple definitions of rich and poor, showing that people can be rich in other ways than money, like in happiness.
