Christian Humanism

  • born out of the Italian renaissance (rebirth of learning)
  • the name given to a group of European scholars who studied and taught the humanities (e.g. history, rhetoric etc.)
  • they made the classical world their basis and outlook
  • did not all believe the same things, but came to their own conclusions by similar means

Humanist ideas:

  • dignity of Man
    • believed Man was the most noble of creatures
    • wanted to discover the wonders of human achievement by studying history
  • preferred the active to the contemplative life
    • "traditional" medieval monks believed that…
