Christian Views on Conscience.

Jerome:

  • Means by which we recognise & become actively aware of sin.
  • Has it's limitations - doesn't have the same impact upon everyone, some people have no sense of guilt or shame.
  • Not a reliable guide of morality to all people.

Augustine:

  • 'It's the voice of God speaking to us'.
  • A means of observing God's law.
  • Unreliable - some people don't listen/consult their conscience & instead ignore it.
  • God's grace is essential if conscience is to be an effective means of setting acceptable moral standards.

Aquinas:

  • 'Conscience is the dictate of reason. He who acts against it always sins'.
  • Faculty of human reason that helps
