Christian Views on Conscience.
Jerome:
- Means by which we recognise & become actively aware of sin.
- Has it's limitations - doesn't have the same impact upon everyone, some people have no sense of guilt or shame.
- Not a reliable guide of morality to all people.
Augustine:
- 'It's the voice of God speaking to us'.
- A means of observing God's law.
- Unreliable - some people don't listen/consult their conscience & instead ignore it.
- God's grace is essential if conscience is to be an effective means of setting acceptable moral standards.
Aquinas:
- 'Conscience is the dictate of reason. He who acts against it always sins'.
