In the city of Dujiangyan, south-east of the epicenter, a whole school collapsed with 900 students buried and fewer than 60 survived.

7000 inadequally engineered schools collapsed, killing  19065  children.  Many families this was their only child (one child policy).  So for families with multiple kids, the illegal ones took the places of the first child if they were killed, so the parents were no longer fined.

Around 25% of the deaths were due to landslides and other effects apart from shaking.
