Physical characteristics
-Umbilical cord- After 7-10 days it shrivels and drops off
-Skin- may have millia (small white/ yellow spots), vernix, lanugo and birthmarks
-Eyes-newborn white-skinned babies have blue/grey eyes, dark-skinned have brown
-Weight-approx 3.5kg (low birth weight is below 2.5kg)
Special care for babies
SCBUs (special care baby units) and NICUs (neonatal intensive care units) look after some babies after they're born, staffed by neonatologists, doctors and specially trained nurses and midwives. There is a range of specialist equipment in a SCBU
