Tests

A test for metal ions

 

·       
Lithium –
burns with a crimson-red flame

·       
Sodium – burns
with a yellow-orange flame

 

·       
Potassium – burns
with a lilac flame

 

·       
Barium – burns
with a green flame



Adding
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)

 

·       
Calcium  - forms a white precipitate

 

·       
Copper   - forms a blue precipitate

·       
Iron(ll) - forms a sludgy green precipitate

·       
Iron (III) - forms a reddish brown precipitate

 

·       
Aluminium  - forms
a white at first, but then redissolves in excess NaOH to from colourless
solution

 

·       
Magnesium  - forms
a white precipitate
