When showing the formation of ions by gain or loss of electrons, either use a diagram (remembering to show the electronic configuration) - or write a simple explanation:

e.g. for Sodium and oxygen:

Each sodium atom transfers from sodium to oxygen to give complete shells in which case two sodiums are needed.
