Module 1

1.1.2 Atomic Structures

Protons neutrons and electrons

over 100 years ago chemists put forward a model a model of a nuclear atom, each atom is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.

*Protons and neutrons make up the center of the atom, the nucleus.

*Electrons orbit the nucleus, in shells.

*The nucleus is tiny compared to the total volume of an atom.

*Nucleus of an atom is the most dense and makes up most of the atoms mass.

*Most of an atom consists of empty space, Between the nucleus and the electron shells.

Although the nucleus contains almost all of the atoms mass it makes up only a tiny portion of the atoms volume. In proportion... if the nucleus was a grape then the outer electrons would be about 1.5km away.

Relative mass of a proton is 1 Relative charge is 1+

Relative mass of a neutron is 1 relative charge 0
