Atoms are made up of electrons surrounding a nucleus that contains protons and neutrons.

Atoms - Electrons - Nucleus - Protons + Neutrons

Protons: Relative charge of +1

Neutrons: Neutral

Electrons: Relative charge of -1

Atomic number of an atom: the number of protons it has

Element: a substance that is made of only one atom

The number of electrons in an atom is equal to the amount of protons in its nucleus. Therefore atoms have no overall electrical charge.
