Chemistry C7 - The Chemical Industry

HideShow resource information

The Chemical Industry

Large scale products

  • thousands of tonnes of certain chemicals are needed every year ---> ammonia, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide, phosphoric acid
  • called 'bulk' chemicals

Small scale products

  • called 'fine' chemicals
  • drugs, food additives, fragrances

Research

  • needs to happen before new chemical products are made
  • can take years
  • can be really expensive

Example of research: catalyst

  • testing potential catalysts ---> trial and error
  • computer models of reaction
