Chemistry C2 - New Materials

HideShow resource information

Smart Materials have some really weird Properties

1) Smart matierlas behave differently depending on the conditions eg: Tempreture

2) An example is nitinol - a 'shape memory alloy' it's a metal alloy (half nickel, half titanium) when it's cool you can bend it and twist it bend it too far though and it stays bent. but if you heat it above a certain tempreture it goes back to the remembered shape.

3) used in glasses frames, if you bend them out of shape pop them in a bowel of hot water and it pops back into shape

4) nitinol is also used in dental braces in the mough it warms and tries to return to a remembered shape and so it gently pulls the teeth with it

Nanoparticles are really really
