Laboratory preparation of hydrogen

how to make hydrogen: react zinc with dilute sulphuric acid.

First tubes of gas discarded by displaced air

metal+acid= salt+ hydrogen

zinc+ sulphuric acid -> zinc sulphate and hydrogen

Zn(s)+H2S04 -> ZnSO4 (aq) +H2 (g)

Test for hydrogen

when mixed with air and then ignited hydrogen will explode with a squeaky pop

You can collect hydrogen

over water

by downward delivery

upward displacement of air

why collected this way

1. Its insoluble in water

2. hydrogen is less dense than air

Preparation of oxygen

Made by reacting hydrogen peroxide with maganese dioxide

collect over water
