- Carbon dioxide is an acidic gas which reacts with water to form carbonic acid
- Rain water containing CO2 will react with calcium carbonate should they come in contact, to form calcium hydrogencarbonate
- When water containing calcium hydrogencarbonate evapourates, a deposit of calcium carbonate forms and this results in the formation of stalagmites (Limestone caverns)
