C2- Structure and Bonding

Ionic Bonding

  • A metal reacts with a non-metal, metal atom loses electrons and becomes a positive ion, the non-metal atom gains electrons and becomes a negative ion.
  • The oppositely charges ions are electrostatically attratced, this is ionic bonding.

  • Lithium loses 1 electron to be stable
  • Metal- ions stay the same
  • Fluorine gains 1 electron to be stable
  • Non-Metal- ions change: fluorine-->fluoride, oxygen-->oxide

  • Ionic compounds can conduct electricity, only if the ions are free to…
