Cholesterol

  • Lipid - found in cell membranes (all body tissues)
  • building blocks for cell membranes
  • Insulates nerve fibres (chem messages can travel)
  • used for synthesising hormones
  • White, waxy solid, insoluble in water, melting range 148 - 150 degrees celcius

HDL's

Collects cholesterol + transports to liver to be broken down

LDL

carries cholesterol around body in blood stream + deposits in arteries (narrowing and blocking)
