What happens?

Six hundred soldiers, known as the Light Brigade, are given a miscommunicated order to charge forward into battle. This battle is representative of the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. The soldiers - on horse back - are met by the cannons and guns of the Russian troops and are significantly disadvantaged. We see a description of the battle before the wounded few return. Tennyson's poem both celebrates the heroism of the sixhundred, whilst also questioning the orders given by those in power.

What is it about?

The poem highlights the bravery of the soldiers, but also their blind loyalty in following what were clearly flawed orders. The conflict is shown to be futile and tragic, yet the valour of the six hundred comes through as the predominant message.

Key Ideas:

  • Rhythm: There is a strong three beat rhythm throughout the poem used to mirror the galloping of the horses into battle…
