character- Romeo

at the start of the play, Romeo is shown as a lover, rather than a fighter

absent from the opening fight scene between the Capulets and Montagues 

parents worried about hi as he seems to be depressed- we soon find out the reason for his sadness. in fact he's quite open about it, his love with Rosaline and she love him back

he is taken over by his infatuation, he only agrees to go to the feast to catch a glimpse of Rosaline

quick chang of affection leads to some people to assume that Romeo is a fickle and shallow person- even the friar accuses him of this, his friend when he says

'...young men's love then lies, Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes'

however his lov for Juliet is different to his infatuation with Rosaline 

we can see this in his difference in his personality 

feeling for Rosaline depresses him
