WATER UPTAKE
- The function of root hairs is to absorb water and minerals from the soil. Water moves into a root hair by osmosis.
- The pressure at the top of the xylem vessels is lowered, while the pressure at the bottom stays high. Water therefore flows up the xylem vessels.
TRANSPIRATION
- A potometer can be used to compare the rate of transpiration in different conditions.
- Conditions that affect transpiration rate:
- temperature - transpiration increases as temperature increases.
