National Support 

  • Midlands and the North very strong, Northern Star getting 200,000 readers
  • Support was also very strong in Glasgow after supression of Glasgow Weavers Strike in 1838 
  • Chartism Failed to gain wide national support, Irish nationalists groups refused to support due to Catholics opposition of Chartism 
  • Essex and Suffolk never gave more than 1% strength to chartism due to its large agricultural lavourers 
  • Also failed to gain widespread support in London due to upper class living there

Women and Chartism 

  • During early years women important, running Chartist Sunday schools and playing supporting roles 
  • 100 female chartist movements 
  • Few leaders made an arguent
