1900-1920s

Role: The middle and upper class women were expected to stay at home and manage the servants. They were to be educated. Their clothing restricted thier movement. They would be social, pretty, but not too pretty. Working class 'mam' had a 16 hour day and have no formal education.

Status: All women (regardless of class) were seen as inferior to men; they were weaker and needed to be 'looked after/supported' by men.

1930s

Role: Upper class rarely affected. Middle class women might have to lose servants/become working class. Working class women went without food to ensure health of husband if job became available. Women had to 'make ends meet' but this was not made asy with 'means test'. Poor relief in extreme conditions.
