  • States still have certain control over education curriculum, Alabama still teaching Creationism in its curriculum 
  • However since Bush's No Child Left behind act in 2002 meant that there was a lot more federal oversight over education 
  • Healthcare is still somewhat controlled by the states, California has a very different healthcare programme to Texas 
  • However, Affordable Care Act means that there is a federal requirment for states, massively limits the states power 
  • States still operate under relative freedom when it comes to defence and security, Florida keeping the death penalty which is different to other states 
  • However, since 9/11 it defence has become a far more federal area of policy spending by the department of defence rose
