OVERTHROW OF THE MONARCHY

military defeat and the desertation of army commanders to the enemy created tension and fear in France. Louis actions seemed hostile to the Revolution, so his political opponents became more determined to overthrow him

Military crisis:

  • When war was delared the French army was not well prepared
  • over half of its 12,000 officers emigrated
  • Marie sent french army plans to the Austrians

Royal vetoes:

  • refactory priests and counter-revolutionaries wanted to restore the power of the king and Church
  • 27th May Assembly passed a law for the deportation of refactory priests
  • another law disbanded the Kings guard, and a third set up National guard around Paris
  • Louis REFUSE these laws and there was an expectation of a military coup

Rise of the Sans-culottes:

Leaders of the Paris Section (cordeliers) responded with an armed demonstration. It did not achieve its desired end. the king did NOT withdraw his veto or recall the Girodin ministers.

However it did show the weakness of the King and Assembly and the rising power of the Paris Sections.

The Assembly issued a decree on the 11th July calling every Frenchman to fight

Tension in Paris:

tension was increased by the arrival of federes from the provinces and the publication of the Brunswick manifesto

many of them were militant revolutionaries and republicans
