Ceramic mugs

?

Ceramic:

Ceramic is made up of clay and is hardened when heated up. It is used in pottery as it is very durable.

Advantages:
-Cheap

-Has a high boiling point

-Can be harder than some metals

-Resistant to corrosion

-Easily accessable

-Glazed ceramic does not stain

Disadvantages:

-Shaping products may be hard when manufacturing a product

-Weak in tension and poor shock resitant

-Can crack when it is hit with a heavy item

Mugs:

-The clay is spun so it can be worked with. Water is added to make it easier to work with and made into liquid clay called slip

-It is placed into a plaster mould which is slightly bigger than the expected size as it will shrink when being heated up. Water is also added and the plaster mould absorbs the clay and the water. The cup is then left for several hours to dry

-The cup is taken out of the mould and is cleared. It is then coated in a clear glaze and is ready to be decorated

-It is painted to whatever the designer wishes to have it and is then placed in a gas fired kiln which fires it up to 1204 degrees celcius for 8 hours to completely dry due to ceramic having a high boiling point

-The mug is checked for any cracks or damages

My mug plan:

A- It will have a cream coloured background with a selection of green leaves. The handle will be like a leaf. It will feel quite smooth because it will be used for the lips and mouth so it cannot be jaged otherwise it may hurt the user. The handle must be the same otherwise the user will have a hard time to use th mug. The mug will have a rubber handle so it gives the product a different look as there will be a change in pattern from the actual mug to the handle and a different more rough texture to it to give the user an actual grip when holding the mug so they do not drop it.
