Mitosis is a copying process that redistributes DNA when body cells divide; it occurs continuously during all normal growth and tissue replacement. In this process, one cell divides to produce two daughter cells that are identical to each other and to the parent cell. In the stage that precedes the actual division, called interphase, molecules of DNA are replicated and are loosely organized into a network of extended filaments known as chromatin.
