Effect of war on the military:

- 9 year war with Japan - lost
- low supplies of ammunition
- One third of the army fought without a rifle
- Not enough food, even though all food from Russia was sent to the front
- Medical resources were limited
- Men had no boots
- Weak leadership skills

Russia's army had just come out of a 9 year war, which they lost, with Japan and was not strong enough to fight again. Yet the soldiers found themselves headed to fight in the First World War poorly equipped as they had limited supplies of ammunition and nearly a third of the army marched into battle without even a rifle. Soldiers also did not have boots, medical supplies were hard to come by and so many men died with simple wounds that got infected, sever food shortages meaning that men were weak and unable to fight and…
