Hitler was to blame: He was a Nazi dictator, willing to stop at nothing to gain power. He hated Communism and wanted to stop it by controlling Russia - to do this he would have to start a war. His foreign policy aims were to overturn the Treaty of Versaille, create a Greater Germany and unite all German speaking people and acquire Lebensraum (living space). This would mean he'd have to invade countries - starting a war. He said, in 'Mein Kampf', that the only way to make Germany strong again was to overturn the Versaille Treaty.

The Great Depression: Desperate people turned to extreme dictators like Hitler and Mussolini as they provided solutions.
