  • depopulation, population went from 1.1m to 600,000.
  • dereliction and deindustrialisation as ship building (41 yards down to 3), chemical and engineering work went abroad leaving people unemployed and empty buildings.
  • degeneration as people moved out to look for work (20,000 jobs lost per annum)
